Patent Application Parts
A patent application contains several components. Several of these components are described in this section
.
The three primary components that comprise the majority of the patent application include the following:
-
Specification
The specification is a written description of the invention and of the manner and process of making and using the same. The specification must be in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which the invention pertains to make and use the same.
-
Drawings (when necessary)
A patent application is required to contain drawings if drawings are necessary for the understanding of the subject matter sought to be patented. The drawings must show every feature of the invention as specified in the claims.
-
Claims
The claim or claims must particularly point out and distinctly claim the subject matter which you regard as the invention. The claims define the scope of the protection of the patent. Whether a patent will be granted is determined, in large measure, by the choice of wording of the claims.
Are there any other components?
Yes. The application will also contain other components; such as, the abstract, uspto forms, fees, and all correspondence that indicates what is to be done.
